The first half of the 2016 NawFuL season is in the books, and if one thing is clear it's that no one is likely to run away with a Gehlke Bros. Football championship this year. Despite the Senior Bro's current lead in the Surfy standings, every week has been a hard-won struggle peppered most recently by ties and overtime nail-biters.

Such was the case in Week 9 — the latest of the abbreviated bye-week schedules — in which the Bros saw clear to split just two of the 13 games. Both were competitive to the end, starting with Detroit at Minnesota in the so-called "black and blue" NFC North. After trailing the entire game, the Vikings managed to grab a 3-point lead on a late touchdown that left Detroit less than 30 seconds to get into field goal range. But the Lions roared back, and Matt Prater booted a 58-yarder to send the game into overtime, where the visitors won it on a first-possession touchdown, 22-16.

Sean had the advantage heading into the afternoon session, during which the Carolina Panthers grabbed an early touchdown and hung on for a 13-10 victory in Los Angeles when the Rams failed to recover their onside kick after a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Glenn salvaged the split as a result, and so there was no change in the Surfy standings. On the day when Glenn and Ben bid a sad goodbye to their departed pet cat of 15 years, Eevee, it was perhaps a fitting tribute that both split games were won by teams with feline mascots.

Despite his state of mourning, Ben managed to record the week's best record at 10-3 to move back into a second-place tie in the overall standings with his uncle. Sean and Glenn, meanwhile, tied for second at 9-4. We all got right the picks of Atlanta, Miami, Kansas City, Dallas, New Orleans, San Diego and Seattle. Baltimore was the only winner that threw us all a curve.
