Three ways to get to 13-3

If Week 1 was any indication, the 2009 football season will be filled with plenty of highs and lows and a lot of close competition among the Gehlke Bros. From the opening kickoff in Pittsburgh on Thursday night, to the settling of the dust on the exposed baseball diamond in Oakland on Monday evening, there were many exciting moments and more than a little nail biting on the part of our three prognosticators.

Ben seemed to pick up where he left off last season, running the table on the Sunday morning games until Tampa Bay lost to Dallas. The Chaos Kid was the lone one among us to pick the Jets over Houston. But his fortunes ebbed in the afternoon, allowing his dad and uncle to regain lost ground.

Meanwhile, Glenn and Sean registered four splits. The Senior Bro saw his early picks of Miami and Carolina falter, only to be saved from a potential season-opening disaster when Denver salvaged an improbable come-from-behind 12-7 victory in Cincinnati, thanks to a tipped pass for a touchdown in the waning seconds.

The Sunday nighter, between Chicago and Green Bay, was a see-saw battle that saw the Packers prevail 21-15, lifting Glenn back into a tie for the week.

Although they took different paths to get there, Sean, Glenn and Ben wound up with identical 13-3 records — not a bad way to start the year. We all correctly predicted the wins by Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Baltimore, Minnesota, Indianapolis, Seattle, the N.Y. Giants, New England and San Diego. There were no games that we all picked incorrectly.
