Hut, hut, Ike!

The only thing more topsy-turvy this weekend than the storm that ravaged the Texas coastline and forced the postponement of the Ravens-Texans game to November was the Gehlke Bros. Football picks. The Bros could find seemingly little to agree upon among the 15 games that did take place in Week 2, and coupled with a bunch of victories by road teams, the final impact on the standings was as wild as some of the destruction left behind in Hurricane Ike's wake.

Chasing Ben coming into the week, Glenn and Sean mustered seven splits between them, including their third Monday night game in two weeks. Sunday, the ball largely wound up bouncing the Senior Bro's way.

The Panthers came back late to beat the visiting Bears 20-17, and the Titans went in to Bengals country and won 24-7. Washington had to come back at home against New Orleans for a 29-24 win, and it was the Patriots showing that they can still win without Tom Brady, holding off the host Jets 19-10. Those four games assured Glenn a winning week.

But Sean had some good fortune on his side, as well. The punchless Colts overcame five first-half field goals by the Vikings to win 18-15 up in Minnesota, then it was a blown call and some risky coaching strategy that helped the host Broncos overcome a late deficit to sink the Chargers 39-38, when Coach Mike Shanahan called a 2-point conversion instead of kicking the safe extra point that likely would have sent the game into overtime.

The Junior Bro savored those wins all the more after the Cowboys beat the Eagles on Monday, avenging a couple of previous home defeats at the hands of Donovan McNabb and company. It was a game that gave Glenn a pivotal 3-game boost -- and his first lead since early in the 2007 season.

Glenn managed a solid 10-5 record in winning the week, while Sean and Ben tied for second at 7-8. We all succeeded in picking Arizona and Pittsburgh to win. We all guessed incorrectly in Oakland's and San Francisco's wins, which is ironic given that we all live in the Bay Area and know these two teams really aren't good enough to be road warriors...
