Everything old is new again

Ahhh, a new season filled with hope and promise and expectations of great things to come for football fans old and young... It all lasted about as long as Tom Brady's knee did against the Chiefs... About as long as it took for Brett Favre to chuck his first touchdown pass as a Jet... About as long as it took for the Gehlke Bros to hash out their first round of predictions for Sunday's games and watch the harsh reality that is the NawFuL take hold.

Senior and Junior Bro managed to split six picks in Week 1 action. Glenn looked to be in control after Sunday, with three victories in four pivotal games. Atlanta defeated visiting Detroit 34-21, host New Orleans won a 24-20 see-saw battle against Tampa Bay, and Arizona went into San Francisco and handed the 49ers a 23-13 loss. Sean got help from Tennessee, which shut down visiting AFC South rival Jacksonville 17-10.

But even in a new season some things never seem to change, and it came down to Monday night to save the weekend for the three-time defending Gehlke Bros. Football champ. Thanks to a scheduling quirk by the football gods, Monday's card featured a pair of games that we split on. In the first, Aaron Rodgers and the new-look Green Bay Packers picked up where they left off last season and defeated the Vikings 24-19 at Lambeau Field. Then it was the Broncos handing the Raiders an embarrassing 41-14 home loss. 'Nuff said.

Net result: A wash. The Bros remain tied after opening week, the first time that has happened since 2002, when we also split six games in Week 1.

Glenn and Sean finished at 10-6, but they were both eclipsed by Ben who posted a 12-4 record and won the week, thanks to some Sunday afternoon upsets. We all correctly predicted wins by the N.Y. Giants, N.Y. Jets, Buffalo, New England, Pittsburgh and Dallas. No one predicted the win by Chicago.
