The first week of a new football season has come and gone, and if there were any preconceptions that we'd just nail our Week 1 picks -- being the professional amateur prognosticators that we are -- they were quickly laid to rest by the outcome on the field. Glenn may be the two-time reigning Gehlke Bros. Football champ, but it wasn't enough to help him shake the Monday Night Curse, which has already reared up to bite.
Week 1 threw NawFuL fans plenty of curves. There was the huge upset of Denver at the hands of last year's cellar dweller Miami. And former league doormat San Francisco held off early NFC West favorite St. Louis, 28-25. Even the displaced New Orleans/San Antonio Saints claimed an improbable win at heavily favored Carolina. The league is clearly on its ear. Or is it? It's too early to know, which was perhaps the main reason that Sean (aka Junior Bro) was able to capitalize and take a 2-game lead.
Home teams were good to have on your side Sunday. We can only assume that Sean watched gleefully as the Chiefs put some serious hurt on the visiting Jets, and the Lions showed up the aging Packers. His pick of Houston over Buffalo didn't pan out, however, so it came down to Monday night's contest between the Eagles and Falcons to decide whether Glenn could even the score or Sean would capture the week. The Eagles struggled on offense in the rematch of last season's NFC title game. Atlanta's Michael Vick was his usually spry self and had just enough offense to pull off the 14-10 victory.
So Sean wins the week with a 10-6 record, Glenn settles for a straight-down-the-middle 8-8, and Ben was 6-10. We found consensus in picking winners Washington, Cincinnati, Jacksonville and the N.Y. Giants. Upsets burned us, as we all missed Miami, Dallas and San Francisco.
IMPORTANT NOTE FROM LEAGUE HEADQUARTERS: The Senior Bro will be on the road for a couple of weeks, so updates to the site for Weeks 2 and 3 may be spotty and/or late. Check NawFuL Notes for further updates.
