Season update — Sean leads by 1
It's a story that has become all too familiar in the recent annals of Gehlke Bros. Football -- Another Monday night. Another split. Another win for the Junior Bro. Yes, the 2004 campaign began right where the 2003 season ended, with Sean continuing his Monday mastery and Glenn still desperately searching for an end to what has come to be known as the Monday Night Curse.
Week 1 started off contentiously for the Bros. and ended on the same note four days later. In the Thursday night season opener, Glenn snagged an early advantage when the Patriots held off the Colts at Foxboro Stadium in a rematch of last year's AFC Championship game. Then came a figurative calm before the storm Saturday morning when we both agreed on picking against the Dolphins in a game moved up a day to avoid possible problems from approaching Hurricane Ivan.
Sunday, normally the first day on the NawFuL schedule, became the third opening day of the long weekend. It was a day that saw Sean bounce back from the Thursday stumble. Glenn added a game with a 21-7 Seattle win over New Orleans. But then fortunes turned as Jacksonville downed Buffalo on a last second touchdown, and Atlanta won its first game at San Francisco in 13 years. That 21-19 win allowed Sean to tie things up, setting up the Monday night showdown.
On Monday, the Senior Bro rested his hopes on youthful Stupor Bore runner-up Carolina to get the job done, while Sean went with the experience of Brett Favre and his potent Green Bay offense. In the end, it was the Panthers' miscues that left them on the short end of a 24-14 loss, and Sean with a 1-game lead heading into Week 2 of our young season.
Sean won the week with an 11-5 performance, leaving Glenn to finish 10-6 and Ben at 8-8. Agreements were difficult to come by, although we all correctly picked St. Louis, the N.Y. Jets, Minnesota and Denver. We all got tripped up by Cleveland and Detroit (first road win in 25 games!).
