Week 1 — Results

Season update — All tied up

Blame it on the Thursday night season kickoff... blame it on the Bros' shaking off the rust of another long offseason... No, blame it on Dwayne Rudd! Week 1 was sure bizarre.

It isn't too often that we begin the year with six splits; that's usually the kind of performance we in NawFuL land save until late in the season when one of us is desperate to make up games. But six was indeed the split total, and when it was all over Monday night the Gehlke Bros. had played to a draw. Sean capitalized on victories by Chicago, San Diego and Kansas City. Glenn kept things even with wins by Indianapolis, Denver and New England.

It could have been a 2-game lead for the Senior Bro had Cleveland not choked away a victory against the Chiefs. With three seconds to play and the Browns leading by a deuce, the Chiefs rumbled 36 yards on what looked like the final play of the game. But then came the incident that we will remember henceforth as the "Dwayne Rudd Victory Toss." The Browns' linebacker thought the game had ended and threw his helmet in the air to celebrate, but he got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, which moved the Chiefs 15 yards closer to the goal line and set up Morten "I Could Hit A Field Goal From 80 Yards With My Eyes Closed" Andersen for the game-winner. There's your NawFuL moment for Week 1.

And how about those Texans! What fun to see Jerry Jones scowling on the sidelines during Dull-as' embarrassing loss to the NawFuL's infant franchise. All Cowboys haters should have a tape of that game in their permanent collections.

Other lowlights include John Gruden losing in his debut at Tampa Bay, and who will soon forget Monday's thrashing of Kordell Stewart and company in New England? Just a tip, Kordell... if you're going to make touchdown passes it helps to actually throw the ball rather than hang on to it until the defense knocks you silly.

Glenn and Sean compiled 9-7 marks in Week 1, but it was Ben with his pick of Cinderella Houston who staked a 10-6 mark to set the pace. We all correctly guessed the wins of San Francisco, Green Bay, the Jets and Oakland. We were unanimous in picking losers in the cases of Baltimore and Tampa Bay.
