Perhaps it is only fitting in a season that saw Glenn go an amazing nine consecutive weeks without losing ground in the Gehlke Bros. Football Picks competition, and routinely hit two-thirds of his predictions each week, that the final week of the 1998 NFL season was a relative disaster. Sean managed to save some face in Week 17, taking four of five splits and finishing with a 10-5 record to ease some of the pain suffered at the hands of a disappointing autumn. Not only did Glenn's 7-8 mark represent his only sub-.500 performance of the year, but it also trailed Benji at 8-7 who will undoubtedly delight in a chorus of "In your face" one more time.
While the senior Bro. may have lost the battle in the final week he nonetheless won the war for 1998, recovering the coveted Gehlke Bros. perpetual trophy for the coming year. Sean relinquished the statuette on Christmas Day in a ceremony marked by kneeled bowing to the strains of Queen's "We Are the Champions." He vowed to not repeat the performance in 1999.
For the record, in Week 17 we all correctly predicted victories by the Jets, Broncos and 49ers, but we missed on losses by Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Miami. Of the 240 games picked this year, Glenn finished at 156-84, Sean placed second at 144-96, and Benji in his first season as an unofficial participant was nearly even at 119-121, finishing 37 games out of first and 25 behind Sean. A few more years of practice and he might be ready for prime time.
